Built for teams that hire 1 to 50 people a year

Skills Assessment Software for Small Business Hiring and Candidate Testing

Skills assessment software for a small business is a tool that builds a short, job-specific test, sends it to your applicants as a link, and scores the answers for you. Assessing.ai generates that test from a plain description of the role, so you are not paying for a 350-test enterprise library you will never open. Plans start at $49 a month, or $288 a year, with no per-candidate credits to run out of.

Type the role below, pick your question types, and you will have a working assessment before you finish reading this page.

What small teams actually need from a candidate assessment tool

Most pre-employment testing software is priced and built for a recruiting department. If you are the owner, the office manager, or the one HR generalist, the requirements are different.

Tests written for your role, not a library

Describe the job the way you would describe it to a friend. The generator writes questions about that role: a bookkeeper gets reconciliation and QuickBooks questions, a dispatcher gets routing and customer escalation questions. You edit anything you do not like before sending.

Choice questions scored instantly, written answers in one view

Single and multiple choice answers are scored the moment a candidate submits, with partial credit on multiple choice. Written and recorded answers sit next to that score in the results view, so you read the 12 essays that matter (the top scorers) instead of all 40, and add a score by hand in a couple of clicks.

Flat pricing, no candidate credits

Credit-based tools look cheap until you post one job and get 200 applicants. Our plans price responses per month, not per hire, so a busy month does not turn into an overage invoice.

One link, no candidate signup

Applicants open a link and start. Nothing to install, no account to create, no proctoring software to download. Fewer people drop out of the funnel because the test was annoying.

Time limits and randomized questions

Set a window, shuffle the question order, and shuffle the answer order. It will not stop a determined cheat, but it stops the casual copy and paste between two applicants who found each other on Reddit.

Results you can hand to your boss

Score distribution, an average, a respondent list you can sort by score, and CSV export of every response. If someone later asks why you hired this person and not that one, you have the record.

How to test candidates before you interview them

1

Describe the role

Paste the job title, or the whole job posting. Pick hiring as the use case and choose how hard the questions should be.

2

Review the questions

You get a draft assessment in about a minute. Delete the questions that do not apply, add one of your own, set a time limit.

3

Send one link

Put the link in your reply to applicants, in the job posting, or in your ATS auto-reply. Candidates take it on a phone or a laptop.

4

Rank and shortlist

Scores land in your dashboard as people finish. Sort by score, open the written answers you care about, and invite your top three to a call.

Skills assessment software pricing compared

Prices below were checked on the vendors' own pricing pages. Read the annual number, not the monthly one: two of the three tools quote a monthly price that is only available on an annual commitment.

Tool Entry paid plan Billed per year How volume is charged Where it wins
Assessing.ai $49 a month, or $288 a year $288 on the annual plan 500 responses a month, no credits Cheapest way to run role-specific tests written by AI from your job posting, with written and recorded answers included
TestGorilla $142 a month on an annual commitment $1,704 Seat based, full library of 350+ tests The biggest library of ready-made, scientifically validated tests, plus a free tier with 10 credits a month
Testlify $139 a month $1,668 100 credits a year, $21 per extra credit on monthly billing Large test library and a 30 day money-back guarantee, useful if you want validated tests without a sales call

Roles small businesses screen with a skills test

Bookkeepers and accounting clerks

Reconciliation, chart of accounts, accounts payable coding, and QuickBooks navigation. Ten questions separates the people who have actually closed a month from the people who have watched a video about it.

Administrative and office roles

Spreadsheet formulas, calendar and travel logic, written communication, and a short scenario about handling a difficult caller. Written answers matter more here than multiple choice.

Customer support and service desk

Tone, escalation judgment, and product comprehension. Send the applicant a realistic angry email and score how they would reply.

Warehouse, dispatch, and field service

Safety knowledge, basic math, scheduling logic, and reading a work order. Fast to build, and it filters no-shows before you spend a morning on interviews.

Sales development reps

Objection handling, qualification frameworks, and a written cold email to a named persona. The email is the test.

Compliance and onboarding checks

The same builder works after the hire. Run a knowledge check at the end of onboarding or safety training and keep the score on file.

Why per-candidate credits punish small businesses

Credit pricing was designed for recruiters with predictable pipelines. A small business pipeline is not predictable. You do not hire for eight months, then a lead leaves in March and you get 180 applications in nine days.

On a credit plan, that month is the month you either buy an overage pack or start rationing who gets tested, which defeats the point of testing. Testlify's own pricing page puts extra credits at $21 each, so 60 unplanned candidates is $1,260 on top of the subscription.

A response-based monthly plan behaves the opposite way. Quiet months cost the same as busy ones, and you can afford to test everyone who applies rather than only the resumes that looked good, which is where most of the value of testing actually comes from.

How long should a pre-employment skills test be?

Ten to twenty minutes. Hiring research and every vendor best-practice guide converges on the same range, and the reason is drop-off: past twenty minutes, good candidates who have other offers simply stop.

In practice that is eight to fifteen questions, with at most two written answers. Put the written answers last so a candidate who runs out of patience has still given you scored multiple choice data.

Resist the urge to test everything. You are not certifying the person. You are deciding whether to spend forty-five minutes on a call with them.

What a skills test is not allowed to do

In the United States, a selection procedure that screens candidates is covered by the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures and by Title VII. The short version for a small employer: test the skills the job actually uses, apply the same test to every applicant for that role, keep the records, and do not use the score as the only reason for a decision.

Personality and cognitive tests carry more legal exposure than job knowledge tests, which is one reason a plain job-knowledge assessment is a sensible starting point for a company without an employment lawyer on retainer. This is general information, not legal advice, and a state law such as New York City's Local Law 144 may add obligations if you use automated scoring in a hiring decision.

Do you need a validated test library?

Sometimes. If you hire hundreds of people a year into the same standardized role, a psychometrically validated library is worth its price, and this is where TestGorilla and the older assessment vendors genuinely beat a generator: their tests come with normative data and validation studies.

If you hire nine people a year into nine different jobs, that library is mostly shelfware. What you need is a test that matches the specific role in front of you today, built in the ten minutes you have between candidate calls. That is the gap this tool fills, and it is the honest boundary of when to choose us.

Questions small employers ask before buying

How much does skills assessment software cost for a small business?

Expect $50 to $200 a month for a small business with moderate hiring. Assessing.ai starts at $49 a month or $288 a year. TestGorilla's cheapest paid plan is $142 a month on an annual commitment, which is $1,704 a year, and Testlify's Standard plan is $1,668 a year, shown as $139 a month, with 100 credits included.

What is skills assessment software?

It is a platform that builds a structured test of the abilities a job requires, sends it to candidates, and scores the choice questions the moment they are answered. It replaces the ad hoc take-home task with something every applicant gets, scored the same way, with a record you can defend later.

Can I test candidates without buying a test library?

Yes. A generator writes questions from your job description instead of pulling them from a catalog. You review and edit before sending, so the test matches the actual role rather than a generic job title that only partly resembles yours.

How do I stop candidates from cheating on an online skills test?

Use a time limit, randomize question and answer order, and include at least one written answer that asks for reasoning about your specific business. Perfect prevention needs proctoring, which most small businesses do not need. The realistic goal is to make copying slower than answering.

Do candidates need to create an account to take the test?

No. They open the link, enter their name and email, and start. Removing the signup step measurably reduces the number of applicants who abandon the assessment, which matters most for hourly and high-volume roles.

Can I use the same tool for employee training checks?

Yes. The same builder produces post-training knowledge checks and compliance quizzes. Pick training or certification as the use case, and the questions and tone change accordingly. Scores export to CSV for your training records.

Is there a free plan?

You can build and preview an assessment without an account to see whether the questions are any good. Sending tests to candidates, collecting responses, and exporting results are on the paid plans, starting at $49 a month.
