Short answer: Hogan does not publish a price list. Expect about $3,050 per person for the certification most Hogan products require, then a per-report fee for every candidate, set by Hogan or one of its distributors. A US distributor lists the Hogan Candidate Summary selection report at $170 and single development reports from $45, so a full leadership battery typically lands in the hundreds of dollars per person.
If you have a Hogan quote on the table, or a consultant has recommended it for a hire, the number you need is not one price but three: the certification, the reports, and the time of whoever interprets them. This page puts every public figure in one place, labels its source, and shows what the same budget buys when the real question is whether an applicant can do the job.

Why the Hogan price has three parts
Certification comes first
Hogan's own FAQ says most of its products require certification, and once someone on your team passes it, your organization is authorized to use the tools. The base program runs two full days in person or four half-day virtual sessions. At $3,050 a head, certifying one HR lead is a fixed cost before a single candidate takes a test. If you do not want to certify anyone, you buy through a certified consultant, and their fee replaces the certification cost.
Then you pay per report
Hogan is sold per assessment and per report, not as unlimited seats. A selection process typically uses the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) for everyday work style, the Hogan Development Survey (HDS) for derailers under pressure and the Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI) for what drives the person. Each takes 15 to 20 minutes, and the Business Reasoning Inventory (HBRI) adds about 35 minutes if you want a cognitive measure. Different reports draw on those inventories, and each report is priced separately.
Then someone has to read it
Hogan reports are dense. Distributors bundle a debrief with a certified coach because a manager without training can misread a high HDS score as a red flag instead of a coaching note. Whether the debrief is your certified employee's time or a consultant's invoice, budget for it.
How much is the Hogan assessment per candidate?
Work it out for a realistic hire. Suppose you are filling one operations manager role, you shortlist 6 finalists and you already have a certified person in house.
| Scenario | Cost |
|---|---|
| 6 Candidate Summary reports at $170 | $1,020 |
| Certification for the one person reading them, first year | $3,050 |
| Year one total for this hire | $4,070 |
| Same hire through a consultant instead, 6 Leadership Forecast packages at $1,650 | $9,900 |
Hogan makes sense at that price for a senior leader, where a bad hire costs a year of salary. It makes much less sense as a first screen for 150 applicants to a coordinator job: at $170 each, screening everyone would cost $25,500. That is why employers who use Hogan run it on finalists only and use something cheaper to get from 150 applicants to six.
Costs to ask about before you sign
| Item | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Report price | What is the per-report price for the exact reports we will use, and does it drop at a volume commitment? |
| Certification | How many of our people need to be certified, and do we need an advanced workshop to use the selection reports? |
| Job profile | Is building a benchmark for our role included, or billed as consulting? |
| Debriefs | Who interprets the results for the hiring manager, and at what hourly or per-candidate rate? |
| Distributor markup | Are we buying from Hogan direct or a distributor? Get two quotes; distributors set their own prices. |
Is Hogan worth it for hiring?
Hogan is one of the most researched personality tools on the market, and for executive and leadership selection it is often worth the cost. Its derailer data is the thing competitors struggle to match: it tells you how a strong candidate is likely to behave when stressed, bored or under pressure, which is exactly what goes wrong with senior hires.
For most hiring at a small or mid-sized US company, the fit is weaker. Hogan tells you about personality and values. It does not tell you whether a payroll clerk knows how to handle a garnishment or whether a service dispatcher can reorganize a day when a technician calls in sick. Those are the questions that decide most hires under the management level, and a job-specific test answers them for a fraction of a Hogan report.
Cheaper alternatives to Hogan, by what you need

| Predictive Index Talent | From $10,000 a year | Annual, by headcount | Behavioral drives, optional cognitive test, unlimited assessments |
| Culture Index | Quote only; estimates $5,000 to $20,000+ a year | Engagement | Seven behavioral traits, advisor support |

If you want a behavioral tool with unlimited use instead of per-report fees, the like-for-like choice is the Predictive Index; our Predictive Index competitors page compares it with Culture Index, Wonderlic and Criteria on price and fit. A job test before the Hogan report
The pattern that keeps Hogan affordable is simple: screen everyone on the job, profile only the finalists. Assessing.ai handles the first step. You describe the role, the AI drafts multiple choice, written and recorded answer questions for it (AI generation is on the Plus plan), you edit anything that does not fit your business, and you send one link with the auto-reply. Multiple choice answers are scored the moment a candidate submits. Written and recorded answers land in one results view where your team scores them, so 150 applicants become a ranked list and the six Hogan reports go to people who can already do the work.
The honest limits: Assessing.ai has no personality inventory, no normed library, no proctoring and no native ATS connector, and it does not grade written answers with AI. It does not replace Hogan for leadership selection. If you are a Hogan-certified coach rather than an employer, the cost that matters is winning the engagement, and client intake automation can run the discovery conversation before your first call. For employers, our pre-employment testing software for small business page explains how to run a job test as a first screen, including the legal basics.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Hogan assessment cost?
Hogan does not publish prices; they vary by report, volume and distributor. Public distributor listings show $170 for the Candidate Summary selection report and $45 for single development reports, and a Leadership Forecast package with five reports and a coach debrief at $1,650. Most products also require certification at $3,050 per person.
How much does Hogan certification cost?
Base Hogan Assessments Certification costs $3,050 per person in 2026, bought from Hogan or a US distributor. Each advanced workshop, Advanced Interpretation or Advanced Feedback, costs $1,850. Bundles run $4,250 for the base plus one workshop and $5,450 for the base plus both. The base course is two days in person or four virtual half days.
Can I buy the Hogan assessment without certification?
Hogan says most of its products require certification. Without it, you buy through a certified consultant or distributor, who administers the assessment and debriefs the results. That replaces the $3,050 certification fee with the consultant's per-candidate or package price, such as the $1,650 Leadership Forecast package with a 90 minute debrief.
How long does the Hogan assessment take?
According to Hogan, the HPI, HDS and MVPI each take 15 to 20 minutes on average, and the HBRI reasoning test about 35 minutes. Candidates taking the three personality inventories together should plan for about an hour. The assessments can be paused and resumed.
Is Hogan better than the Predictive Index?
They serve different buyers. Hogan is priced per report after certification and is strongest for leadership selection and development, with detailed derailer data. The Predictive Index sells unlimited assessments on an annual plan from $10,000 a year and is aimed at companies using one behavioral framework across hiring and management.
What is a cheaper alternative to Hogan for screening applicants?
A job-specific skills test. Assessing.ai starts at $49 a month with no contract and drafts a test for your role, and TestGorilla Core costs $1,704 a year for a library of tests. Many employers screen every applicant with one of these, then buy Hogan reports only for the last two or three finalists.
What to do next
If you are hiring a senior leader, ask Hogan and one distributor for a quote on the exact reports and the certification you need, and compare them against using a certified consultant for this one hire. If you are hiring a handful of people a year below the management level, compare Assessing.ai plans and build a test for the role you have open now.
