For employers quoted a Hogan certification before their first report

Hogan Assessment Alternatives Without Certification From $49 a Month

The closest Hogan assessment alternatives are Caliper, the Predictive Index, PXT Select and SHL, which also sell employer-grade personality profiles. If your actual question is which applicants can do one specific job, the cheaper alternative is a job-specific skills test. Hogan asks most buyers to certify a user first ($3,050 per person) and then pay per report (a US distributor lists the Candidate Summary at $170); Assessing AI starts at $49 a month with no certification and no contract.

Type the role into the generator and read the questions it drafts. If you are selecting executives and want derailer data on three finalists, Hogan is very good at that and we say so in the table below.

A personality report describes the person, a job test checks the work

Hogan's HPI, HDS and MVPI are well researched and tell you how someone tends to behave, where they may derail under pressure and what they value. None of that tells you whether your next office manager can build a payroll schedule or whether a dispatcher can route six trucks. A twelve-question test on those tasks does, and it costs the same whether 10 or 200 people apply.

  • Choice questions scored the moment applicants submit
  • Written and recorded answers reviewed side by side
  • One link in the job post, no candidate account

Why employers look for a Hogan assessment alternative

Hogan has decades of validation behind it and a strong reputation in leadership selection. The employers who search for an alternative rarely doubt the science. They run into the buying model, the cost per head or the mismatch between a personality inventory and the job they need filled.

Certification before the first report

Hogan's own FAQ says most of its products require a certified user. Base certification is listed at $3,050 per person (two days in person or four virtual half days), and advanced workshops add about $1,850 each.

A fee for every report

After certification you still pay per report. A US distributor lists the Candidate Summary at $170 and a Leadership Forecast package with a coaching debrief at $1,650. Screening 60 applicants that way is not realistic.

No price list on hogan.com

Hogan's FAQ says pricing varies, so most buyers piece the budget together from distributors and consultants. That makes it hard to compare with tools that publish a monthly price.

Three inventories, about an hour

The HPI, HDS and MVPI take roughly 15 to 20 minutes each, and the HBRI reasoning test about 35. That is fine for finalists and too long as a first screen for an hourly role.

Interpretation depends on one person

Reports are meant to be read by a certified user. If that person leaves, you either certify a replacement or pay a consultant to debrief each candidate.

Hard to link to the job

Applicants often cannot see how a personality inventory relates to the role. A test built from your job post reads as fair because every question is visibly about the work.

How to replace a Hogan screen with a job test this week

1

Write down the first-month tasks

Pick the two or three things the hire must handle in the first 30 days. For an operations manager that may be scheduling, vendor follow-up and a weekly report. That list becomes the test.

2

Generate the first draft

Paste the job description or type the role. On Plus, the AI drafts multiple choice, written and recorded answer questions for that job in under a minute.

3

Edit and set the rules

Delete anything that does not fit your business, add a question about your own software or process, set a time limit and shuffle the order.

4

Send one link, then profile finalists if you want

Put the link in the job post. Choice answers are scored on submit, your team scores written and recorded answers, and you sort everyone by score. Run Hogan or another profile on the last two or three if the role warrants it.

Hogan assessment alternatives compared on price and fit

Who should switch, and who should keep Hogan

Switch for frontline and office hiring

Customer service, admin, dispatch, bookkeeping and sales development roles are hired on what people can do from week one. A short test on those tasks screens everyone, not only finalists.

Switch if nobody is certified

If no one on your team holds a Hogan certification and you hire fewer than 20 people a year, $3,050 per certified user plus per-report fees is a large fixed cost for a small number of decisions.

Switch if you hire in seasons

Landscapers, tax practices, clinics and contractors hire in bursts. Monthly billing lets you pay while a role is open and cancel in between.

Keep Hogan for executive selection

For a VP or general manager, derailer data from the HDS and a coached debrief are worth the money. A job test does not replace that, and we do not claim it does.

Look at PXT Select for one-hour depth at lower cost

If you want cognitive, behavior and interests in one assessment without certification, partner price lists put PXT Select at $175 to $295 per candidate. Our PXT Select cost guide runs the math.

Or test first and profile finalists

Many employers screen every applicant with a 15 minute job test and buy a personality report only for the last two. That keeps the Hogan budget for the decisions where it matters.

What Hogan costs next to the alternatives, per hire

Hogan publishes no price list, so the budget comes from certification and distributor prices. Base certification is $3,050 per person. After that, a US distributor sells the Candidate Summary at $170 per candidate and the Leadership Forecast package at $1,650, which bundles five reports with a 90 minute coached debrief. Our Hogan assessment cost guide breaks down each fee and what to ask before you commit.

Because these tools charge in such different ways, cost per hire is the cleanest comparison. The table assumes 12 hires a year, three finalists profiled per hire where the tool is used on finalists, and one certified user for Hogan in the first year.

SetupFirst-year costPer hire
Hogan, certify one user, Candidate Summary on 36 finalists$3,050 + $6,120 = $9,170About $764
Caliper Profile on 36 finalists at about $265About $9,540About $795
PXT Select on 36 finalists ($250 tier at 10 to 24, $200 at 25 to 99)About $7,200About $600
Predictive Index Talent, entry price$10,000About $833
Assessing AI Starter, every applicant tested, 12 months$588 monthly or $288 billed yearly$24 to $49
Assessing AI Plus, every applicant tested, 12 months$1,788 monthly or $888 billed yearly$74 to $149

The point is not that a skills test replaces a personality inventory. It is that the screen applied to every applicant should cost little per head, and the expensive profile, if you want one, should go only to finalists.

Hogan vs Caliper vs PXT Select for a small employer

All three are long personality-based assessments sold through quotes, partners or certified users, and all three are normally run on finalists. Hogan is the strongest choice for leadership roles because its HDS measures how people behave under stress, which most rivals do not cover. Caliper is the classic choice for sales hiring and compares the candidate with a job model, at about $265 per profile. PXT Select adds a cognitive section and an interests scale to the behavioral part and is the only one of the three with partner price lists you can read before a call, which is why we priced it in our PXT Select cost guide.

If you are weighing a behavioral survey rather than a full inventory, the Predictive Index competitors and Culture Index alternatives pages compare those vendors on price.

What Assessing AI does, and what it does not do

Assessing AI is built for the employer with an open role and more applicants than time. You describe the job, the AI drafts multiple choice, written and recorded answer questions for it (AI drafting is on the Plus plan), you edit anything that does not sound like your business, and you send one link. Choice answers are scored the moment a candidate submits. Written and recorded answers land in one results view where your team scores them, so every applicant is compared on the same questions. Candidates do not create an account.

The honest limits: Assessing AI has no validated personality model, no normed library, no live or video proctoring and no AI grading of written answers. If you need derailer data on an executive finalist, buy a Hogan report for that person. If you need to know which of 80 applicants can do the work, a job test answers that faster and for a fraction of the cost. The pre-employment assessment software pricing page lists 11 more vendors with cost per candidate.

Hogan assessment alternative questions buyers ask

What is similar to the Hogan assessment?

The SHL OPQ, Caliper Profile and PXT Select are the closest to Hogan, since each is a long, research-based personality assessment used for employee selection. Hogan's HDS derailer scale is the hardest to match. For a job-specific skills screen instead of a profile, Assessing AI drafts a test for the role from $49 a month.

Can I use Hogan without certification?

Hogan says most of its products require a certified user, and base certification costs $3,050 per person. Without certification, employers usually buy reports through a certified consultant or distributor who interprets them and runs the debrief, which adds a fee per candidate.

What is cheaper than the Hogan assessment?

Tools with published self-serve prices are cheaper for screening many applicants. Assessing AI starts at $49 a month with no contract, TestGorilla Core costs about $2,580 a year, and PXT Select partners list $175 to $295 per candidate. These measure skills, or behavior and aptitude, rather than Hogan's derailers.

Is Hogan better than the Predictive Index?

They answer different questions. Hogan is a deeper personality inventory with derailer and values scales and suits leadership selection; the Predictive Index is a short behavioral survey with an optional cognitive test, sold as software from $10,000 a year. Neither tells you whether a candidate can do the specific job.

How long does the Hogan assessment take?

The HPI, HDS and MVPI take roughly 15 to 20 minutes each, so the core three run about 45 to 60 minutes, and the HBRI reasoning test adds about 35 minutes. That length is why most employers use Hogan on finalists rather than every applicant.

Can I use a skills test instead of a personality test for hiring?

Yes. For most hourly, office and sales development roles, a short test on the real tasks of the job predicts early performance more directly than a personality profile and is easier to defend because every question relates to the work. Give every applicant the same test and keep questions job-related.
