DISC Assessment for Hiring and DISC Employment Test for Employers
A DISC assessment can support hiring, but it should not decide who gets the job. Wiley, which publishes Everything DiSC, says not to use it to screen candidates, and TTI Success Insights says DISC cannot be the basis for a selection decision on its own. Use a job-specific test to screen applicants, then use DISC on finalists or new hires to plan how you will manage them.
Type the role into the generator and read the questions it drafts. An Everything DiSC Workplace profile costs $73.50 to $90 per person at the largest US distributor, so profiling 60 applicants runs past $4,400. A job test for the same 60 people costs $49 for the month.

A DISC profile describes a work style, a job test checks the work
DISC sorts people into four styles: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. That is useful when a manager wants to know how a new hire likes to get feedback or how two teammates will clash. It says nothing about whether an applicant can answer a billing question, build a schedule or write a clear follow-up email. A short test built from the job does.
- Choice questions scored the moment applicants submit
- Written and recorded answers reviewed side by side
- DISC kept for finalists and onboarding, where it fits
Why DISC on its own is the wrong hiring filter
Employers search for a DISC test for hiring because it is familiar, cheap per person and easy to read. The problem is not the quality of the tool. It is what the tool was built to measure.
The publishers say not to screen with it
Wiley's guidance for Everything DiSC reads: do not use it to screen candidates, decide promotions, or make employment decisions. DiscProfile.com, Wiley's largest US distributor, points hiring buyers to PXT Select instead, a different product at $175 to $295 per candidate.
Style is not skill
A high D candidate is direct and fast. That tells you nothing about whether they can close a sale, read a lease or handle an angry caller. Two applicants with identical profiles can be a great hire and a bad one.
No right answer means no shortlist
DISC has no passing score. Every style is described as useful. That is the point for team building, and exactly why it cannot rank 60 applicants for one opening.
Legal exposure falls on you
TTI notes that no assessment is EEOC approved and compliance rests with the employer. If a test screens out a protected group at a higher rate, the Uniform Guidelines expect you to show it is job related. A style profile is hard to defend that way.
Per-person fees add up at the top of the funnel
At $69 to $90 a profile, testing every applicant for a role that draws 60 people costs $4,140 to $5,400 for one hire. A flat monthly job test covers the same 60 people for $49.
Candidates can read the room
Self-report style questions are easy to steer toward the profile an applicant thinks you want, especially for sales roles. Job tasks with right and wrong answers are much harder to fake.
How to use DISC and a job test together this week
List the first-month tasks
Write down the two or three things the hire must handle in the first 30 days. For a customer service rep that may be refund rules, a de-escalation reply and logging a ticket.
Generate the job test
Paste the job description or type the role. On Plus, the AI drafts multiple choice, written and recorded answer questions for that job in under a minute. Edit anything that does not sound like your business.
Send one link to every applicant
Put the link in the job post or the auto-reply. Choice answers score instantly; written and recorded answers wait in one results view for your team to score.
Run DISC on two or three finalists
Once the shortlist is built on the work, a DISC profile on the finalists gives the hiring manager talking points for the interview and a head start on how to onboard the person you pick.
DISC assessment options for employers compared on price and fit
Prices come from each vendor's or distributor's own pricing page as listed in the cell. Quote-only vendors are marked. Check the current price before you buy, since distributors change tiers.

Who should screen with a job test, and where DISC still helps
Office and admin roles
Scheduling, data entry accuracy, email tone and basic spreadsheet questions separate applicants in ten minutes. DISC can wait until the person is hired.
Customer service and call centers
A recorded answer to an upset customer and a few policy questions tell you more than a Steadiness score. Our call center test template starts there.
Sales development and inside sales
Hear a 60 second pitch and see how the candidate handles a price objection. Run DISC on the last two to plan coaching.
Bookkeeping and finance support
Reconciliation, coding and accuracy questions have right answers. Those are what you are paying for.
Seasonal hiring
Landscaping, tax prep, retail and clinics hire in bursts. Pay $49 in the months a role is open and cancel in between, instead of buying profile packs that sit unused.
Keep DISC for team building
If your managers already use Everything DiSC for communication workshops, keep it. Give new hires a profile in week one, after the decision is made on job evidence.
What a DISC assessment for hiring costs per hire
DISC is cheap per person, which is why employers reach for it. It stops being cheap when you test the whole applicant pool. Take one customer service opening that draws 60 applicants.
| Approach | People tested | Cost for one hire |
|---|---|---|
| Everything DiSC Workplace on every applicant | 60 | About $4,680 at the 50 to 66 tier ($78 each) |
| $69 online DISC report on every applicant | 60 | $4,140 |
| Job test on everyone, DISC on 3 finalists | 60 plus 3 | $49 plus $270 = $319 |
| Job test only | 60 | $49 for the month |
The third row is what we recommend to most small employers: the job test does the screening and DISC gives the hiring manager something useful for the final interview and onboarding. Over 10 hires a year that is roughly $3,200, against roughly $41,000 to $47,000 for profiling every applicant.
Is DISC legal to use in hiring
Yes, US employers may use DISC in hiring, and many do. The risk is in how you use it. Under the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures, a selection tool that screens out a protected group at a substantially higher rate must be shown to be job related and consistent with business necessity. TTI says it plainly: no assessment is EEOC approved, and the employer carries the compliance responsibility. Wiley goes further and tells customers not to use Everything DiSC for employment decisions at all.
A test built from the actual tasks of the job is the easiest kind to defend, because the link between the question and the work is obvious. Keep the questions about the job, give every applicant the same test and the same time limit, and keep the results. For accommodation requests under the ADA, extend the time limit or offer another format.
What Assessing AI does, and what it does not do
Assessing AI is built for the employer with an open role and more applicants than time. You describe the job, the AI drafts multiple choice, written and recorded answer questions for it (AI drafting is on the Plus plan), you edit anything that does not fit, and you send one link. Choice answers are scored the moment a candidate submits. Written and recorded answers land in one results view where your team scores them, so every applicant is compared on the same questions. Candidates do not create an account.
The honest limits: Assessing AI is not a DISC or personality tool. It has no validated personality model, no normed library, no live or video proctoring and no AI grading of written answers. If you want a validated personality and cognitive profile built for selection, PXT Select is the Wiley product meant for that. If you need to know which of 60 applicants can do the work, a job test answers it faster and for less. The pre-employment assessment software pricing page lists 11 more vendors with cost per candidate.
DISC assessment for hiring questions employers ask
Can DISC be used for hiring?
DISC can be one input in hiring, but it should not decide who gets the job. Wiley tells Everything DiSC customers not to use it to screen candidates, and TTI says DISC cannot be the basis for a selection decision on its own. Most employers screen with a job test and use DISC on finalists or after the hire.
How much does a DISC assessment cost for employers?
An Everything DiSC Workplace profile costs $90 per person for 1 to 16 profiles at DiscProfile.com and falls to $73.50 at 134 or more. Management profiles start at $150. Online DISC reports from smaller publishers run $69 to $129, and Crystal sells 5 reports a month for $99.
Is the DISC test a good pre-employment test?
Not as a screening test. DISC measures work style, with no right or wrong answers, so it cannot rank applicants on whether they can do the job. DiscProfile.com itself says DiSC is not recommended for pre-employment screening and points hiring buyers to PXT Select, which is validated for selection.
What should I use instead of DISC to screen applicants?
Use a short test built from the job: the tasks the hire will handle in the first month, with choice questions that score automatically and one or two written or recorded answers. Assessing AI drafts that test from a job description and costs $49 a month on Starter, with no contract.
Do I need to be certified to give a DISC assessment?
No certification is needed to buy and send Everything DiSC profiles through a distributor. Certification is optional training for people who facilitate DiSC workshops; the Everything DiSC Certified Practitioner course costs $3,795, and a shorter Essentials course is $495.
How long does a DISC assessment take?
Most DISC questionnaires take about 15 to 20 minutes. That is a reasonable ask for a finalist, but it is extra time for every applicant at the top of the funnel, which is another reason to screen with a short job test first and save DISC for the last few candidates.
